Taurine – an amino acid-like compound

Taurine is not a classic amino acid, but rather an aminosulfonic acid – on one hand, it contains sulfur and, on the other, it is not incorporated into proteins by the body.
Even so, it is found in large quantities in almost all body cells, especially in the most active tissues, such as the muscles, the heart, and the retina.

Pure taurine was first obtained in 1827, when two Austrian scientists managed to isolate the substance from ox bile. Hence its name: in Latin, Taurus means bull or ox.
In humans, taurine is also a component of bile, which is essential for fat digestion.

In the human diet, taurine is found mainly in meat and fish – while milk, eggs, and plant-based foods have a very low taurine content.
If taurine is not supplied in sufficient quantities through the diet, the body is able to synthesize it from the amino acid cysteine.
