How does chronic sinusitis occur ?

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses, which are lined with mucous membranes . If the nose is no longer adequately ventilated during a cold , secretions cannot flow fully. As a result, the mucous membranes of the nose and sinuses can become inflamed . Swelling of the mucous membranes can further constrict the nasal passage and back up secretions into the sinuses. Doctors refer to this as acute sinusitis—also colloquially called sinusitis . Antibiotics are often prescribed in this acute stage to quickly kill the pathogens responsible.

If acute sinusitis is not completely cured or if the inflammation mechanism in the nasal mucosa is disrupted, new tissue may form in the inflamed area. If the nasal mucosa forms, doctors refer to it as a polyp . Newly formed tissue can permanently affect sinus ventilation, making sinusitis chronic . Symptoms are less pronounced in chronic sinusitis than in acute inflammation. However, those affected are less resilient , suffer from general exhaustion , and are more susceptible to infections of all kinds . Chronic sinusitis can significantly reduce quality of life.

How does chronic bronchitis develop?

Acute bronchitis is a disease of the lower respiratory tract —more precisely, an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bronchi . It is one of the most common illnesses, especially in winter. Pathogens —primarily viruses (antibiotics are ineffective against them), but also bacteria —migrate from the upper respiratory tract to the bronchi ("the lungs "). The immune system recognizes pathogens and triggers an inflammatory defense reaction . Cold air can further irritate the mucous membrane—and mucous membranes dried out by heating or air conditioning are particularly vulnerable.
On the other hand, a well-protected mucous membrane and an adequate defense system can well protect the respiratory tract from such infections.

If a persistent stimulus affects the bronchial mucosa or if the immune system is weakened, bronchitis can last a long time or recur repeatedly . This is known as chronic bronchitis . It is a permanent burden on the body and can also have negative effects on other areas of the body. Affected individuals often experience relapses, or recurring respiratory infections .
