In its natural L-form, lysine is an essential amino acid used by the human body in protein synthesis.
As a protein component, this amino acid participates in important metabolic processes, in addition to contributing to the formation of tissues and muscles.

However, the human body cannot produce L-lysine on its own, so this amino acid must be obtained through diet.
Lysine is found mainly in foods of animal origin, such as milk, eggs, and fish.

The amino acid L-lysine acts in the body as the “antagonist” of L-arginine, since both use the same cellular transporter.

As arginine is a nutrient used by herpes viruses, an excess of this amino acid can promote viral proliferation.
As a counterpart, L-lysine can inhibit the entry of arginine into cells.
This allows the body to quickly convert free arginine into nitric oxide, when necessary.
