What is histamine?

Histamine is a natural substance produced by our bodies and also found in many foods. It plays a role in processes such as digestion, sleep regulation, and immune response.

When can there be a problem?

The problem is not histamine itself, but its excessive accumulation.

Histamine builds up in the body when there's an imbalance between the amount produced or ingested and the body's ability to eliminate it. This imbalance can be caused by several factors, often combined.

When there is excess histamine, symptoms such as headache, digestive changes such as bloating, pain or diarrhea, redness and itching of the skin, runny and stuffy nose, painful periods or a general feeling of inflammation may appear.

Why can it accumulate?

On the one hand, certain foods naturally contain histamine or stimulate its release in the body, which can generate an excessive load, especially if consumed regularly. Furthermore, the body itself can release large amounts of histamine, not only in cases of allergies, but also in situations of stress, chronic inflammation, infections, or intestinal dysbiosis.

On the other hand, there may also be difficulties in eliminating it efficiently. The main enzyme responsible for its degradation is DAO (diamine oxidase), which acts in the intestine. Its activity may decrease due to genetic causes, intestinal inflammation, or dysbiosis. The liver also participates in its metabolism, and if the hepatic pathways that process histamine are compromised, the accumulation may be exacerbated.

In this context, intestinal dysbiosis is especially relevant, as it can stimulate both excessive production and poor elimination of histamine, creating a vicious cycle that is difficult to break if not addressed comprehensively.
