One of the ingredients in this Glucosamine Chondroitin with MSM formula, Glucosamine, is an amino sugar composed of Glucose and Glutamine, and is a precursor and stimulant for the synthesis of a group of proteins that make up what is known as the "ground substance" of cartilage. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and Proteoglycans (PGs) have an important characteristic: their negative charge, which causes them to retain Sodium which, in turn, leads them to retain water.
By attracting water, they form a kind of gel in the extracellular matrix, creating a "cushion" within the joint, providing lubrication and shock protection.

Since Glucosamine is the raw material for the production of these proteoglycans, it is important that it exists in sufficient quantities in the body. It is an easily absorbed molecule that is quickly assimilated. In the physiological environment, 75% of Glucosamine is non-ionized and, therefore, can easily cross membranes.
With advancing age, joint degeneration is quite common and osteoarthritis ends up affecting a large part of the older population, but there are other factors independent of age that can lead to greater joint wear, such as an intense sports career, for example.

However, a 2012 study conducted an interesting survey. The 82 participants with knee pain from osteoarthritis who completed the study were divided into two groups: Group A received 500 mg of Glucosamine Sulfate per day, and Group B received, in addition to this, the usual painkillers used in these conditions, Ibuprofen and Piroxicam. After 12 weeks, as expected, Group B had greater pain relief than Group A; however, significant differences were also observed in Group A, suggesting some effect of glucosamine on its own. Thus, long-term glucosamine supplementation can improve the condition of these patients and even reduce the need for drugs, improving their quality of life and may even decrease the rate of joint degeneration.
