IMMEDIATE EFFECT
Constipation is cited as one of the main gastrointestinal complaints, due to its significant impact on quality of life, affecting physical and emotional well-being.
In the Western world, there are several factors that condition intestinal function, slowing it down and leading to constipation. These factors can correspond to diseases that secondarily affect the intestine, such as neurological diseases (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease) and metabolic diseases (diabetes, hypothyroidism), or diseases specific to the intestine or anus (inflammation, tumors, areas of stenosis in the intestine). Constipation can also be due to external factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, exposure to stress, or an unbalanced diet, and can be caused or aggravated by various medications. Psychological factors are other common causes of acute and chronic constipation.
According to the duration of symptoms, constipation can be acute or chronic. Acute constipation is temporary, usually lasting less than two weeks; it occurs suddenly and, after the cause disappears, the body resumes normal bowel function. Chronic constipation may manifest over months or years.
Chronic constipation can have several consequences such as the appearance of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fecal incontinence, among others. Prolonged contact of stool in the intestine can result in consequences for some pelvic organs such as the uterus, rectum, bladder, and vagina, and due to the presence of compacted stool, the colon wall is compressed and, in some cases, can result in ulceration. Treating constipation is very important because, in addition to these mentioned consequences, the large intestine has relevant organic functions.
In most healthy individuals, the frequency of bowel movements is less than three times a day and more than three times a week; however, there is no defined pattern of intestinal function, as it varies from person to person.
However, you are considered constipated if you have persistent difficulty in having a bowel movement, if the evacuation requires great effort, or if there are two or fewer bowel movements per week (or if there has been a recent reduction in the usual number of bowel movements).
