DAOfood Plus is a Food for Special Medical Purposes for the dietary management of DAO deficiency. DAOfood® Plus supports digestive health by restoring DAO enzyme activity and breaking down histamine ingested with food.
The Diamine Oxidase (DAO) in DAOfood® Plus supplements the body's own enzyme, which is responsible for metabolizing histamine. Taking one DAOfood® Plus capsule before each meal increases the amount of DAO in the small intestine, thereby increasing the capacity to degrade histamine. This accelerates the processing in the digestive tract of the histamine present in food, which is the trigger for the symptoms. Thus, DAOfood® Plus restores histamine metabolism locally in the small intestine and restores the natural balance between histamine and DAO.
Histamine is an essential molecule, a transmitter that belongs to the group of so-called biogenic amines, which is naturally present in many foods as well as within our cells. Normally, the intake of histamine contained in food does not cause problems, as it is processed and metabolized quickly by the enzyme Diamine Oxidase (DAO).
DAO is the main enzyme for the metabolism of ingested histamine. It is mainly found in the intestinal epithelium, where it absorbs and degrades ingested histamine, preventing it from passing into the bloodstream.
When there is an imbalance between ingested histamine and the capacity or activity of the enzyme to metabolize it, histamine passes into the bloodstream and, after a disproportionate uptake by receptors in tissues, can trigger various reactions. Some causes of DAO deficiency include genetic or acquired origins.
Histamine is present in all food to a greater or lesser extent, whether of plant or animal origin. Foods that have undergone prolonged maturation or have been stored for a long period are particularly rich in histamine and other biogenic amines that are also degraded by the DAO enzyme.

What does DAOfood® Plus contain?
The Eficaps® capsules of DAOfood® Plus contain gastro-resistant tablets with controlled release of DAO in the intestine that bypass the acidic pH of the stomach, and tablets that ensure the immediate release of adjuvant active ingredients. Each capsule contains four tablets: 2 white/beige gastro-resistant tablets with release in the intestine. 1 brown immediate-release tablet with vitamin C. 1 green immediate-release tablet with quercetin*.(*) If you cannot take quercetin, you can open the capsule and remove the green tablet.
