BioActive Vitamin B12 contains light pink tablets with a pleasant mint flavor. Each tablet contains 600 micrograms of methylcobalamin, which is the active form of vitamin B12. The tablets can be sucked or chewed. When the tablets are sucked, they will be predominantly absorbed through the oral mucosa. Take 1 tablet per day. The dosage is high in relation to the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV), but is not associated with any risk of overdose.

Vitamin B12 in the form of cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin are both converted in the body into one of the active forms of B12 before they can be used. The body's ability to perform this activation usually weakens with age. It can also be compromised for other reasons. Since methylcobalamin (active B12) contains a methyl group that it needs to perform its functions, it is more effective than either of the inactive forms.



Pharma Nord's vitamin B12 is more effective than inactive forms. The lining of our stomach produces a protein called intrinsic factor that helps the intestines absorb vitamin B12. Older people may have poor B12 absorption due to a lack of intrinsic factor. Chronic gastritis and gastrectomy (removal of part of the stomach) also cause a deficiency of intrinsic factor.

It is common for doctors to administer vitamin B12 injections directly into a muscle, bypassing barriers such as the lack of intrinsic factor, or poor intestinal absorption for other reasons. Research has shown that high-dose vitamin B12 in tablet form is also effectively absorbed through the oral mucosa, thus bypassing normal gastrointestinal absorption. Chewing the tablets does not appear to reduce the absorption of vitamin B12.
