BioActivo Carotene 60caps - Pharma Nord
BioActivo Carotene from Pharma Nord contains 9 mg of pure, natural beta-carotene (equivalent to 4 large carrots). The beta-carotene is mixed in an oil matrix that remains stable and ensures good bioavailability.
Studies show that beta-carotene is better absorbed as a supplement than from the consumption of vegetables.
What is beta-carotene?
Beta-carotene is a carotenoid, which belongs to a group of yellow and red plant pigments. It is beta-carotene that gives carrots their orange color. Beta-carotene is fat-soluble, meaning it is better absorbed when combined with fat in the upper part of the small intestine. Beta-carotene is also a provitamin, as it converts into vitamin A when the body needs it. Beta-carotene is also produced synthetically and used as a food coloring.
Beta-carotene and vitamin A
Beta-carotene is a good plant-based source of vitamin A and, in certain parts of the world, it is practically the only source of vitamin A for the population. In the body, beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A, which contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, mucous membranes, and vision.
Vitamin A also plays an important role in the process of cell specialization in the body and contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
Beta-carotene
The intake of food and dietary supplements with large amounts of beta-carotene (30 mg or more) can give the skin a yellowish tint. This color is the result of the accumulation of beta-carotene in the subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis), mainly in the area of the hands and feet. The yellowish color disappears when beta-carotene intake is reduced.
Beta-carotene and smokers
All dietary supplements containing beta-carotene should carry a warning for smokers not to use them. This warning is based on research showing that high doses of beta-carotene in heavy smokers can increase the risk of lung cancer.
There is no evidence to suggest that beta-carotene supplements are harmful to non-smokers.
Furthermore, there is no need to fear getting too much vitamin A from beta-carotene, as the body stops converting it once stores are saturated.
Good sources of beta-carotene
Beta-carotene exists in various types of food, some of the best sources being:
- green vegetables
- broccoli
- carrots
- bell peppers
- pumpkin
- apricots
The content of beta-carotene varies significantly in vegetables, as it depends on other factors such as the type of soil where they are grown, fertilizers, wind, weather conditions, and subsequent harvest treatment.
Package contains 60 capsules.
