Alpha-lipoic acid is a type of vitamin found in the body in small amounts, but not always in the required amounts. Alpha-lipoic acid is involved in the Krebs cycle and the production of cellular energy, which our bodies need for optimal performance.

Alpha-lipoic acid is considered an excellent antioxidant, particularly because it is both water- and fat-soluble. It has very positive effects on liver protection and detoxification because it stimulates the production of glutathione, an enzyme that acts as a cell protector and detoxifier. Alpha-Lipoic R+ contains 150 mg of R(+)-lipoic acid per capsule. Most alpha-lipoic acid dietary supplements are a 50/50 mixture of natural R(+)-lipoic acid and synthetic S(-)-lipoic acid; this mixture is called a "racemic mixture" or "racemate."

In some cases, S(-)-lipoic acid is simply less effective than R(+)-lipoic acid, but in other cases, the S(-) form actually acts in opposition to the activity of R(+)-lipoic acid.
