BioActivo Vitamin B12 contains light pink tablets with a pleasant mint flavor. Each tablet contains 600 micrograms of methylcobalamin, the active form of vitamin B12. The tablets can be sucked or chewed. When sucked, they are predominantly absorbed through the oral mucosa. Take one tablet daily. The dosage is high relative to the Nutrient Reference Intake (NRI), but is not associated with any risk of overdose.

Vitamin B12 in the form of cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin are both converted in the body to one of the active forms of B12 before they can be used. The body's ability to perform this activation typically weakens with age. It can also be compromised for other reasons. Because methylcobalamin (active B12) contains a methyl group that it needs to perform its functions, it is more effective than either of the inactive forms.



Pharma Nord's vitamin B12 is more effective than inactive forms. Our stomach lining produces a protein called intrinsic factor, which helps the intestines absorb vitamin B12. Older people may experience B12 malabsorption due to a lack of intrinsic factor. Chronic gastritis and gastrectomy (removal of part of the stomach) also cause intrinsic factor deficiency.

Doctors commonly administer vitamin B12 injections directly into a muscle, bypassing barriers such as a lack of intrinsic factor or impaired intestinal absorption for other reasons. Research has shown that high-dose vitamin B12 in tablet form is also effectively absorbed through the oral mucosa, bypassing normal gastrointestinal absorption. Chewing tablets does not appear to reduce vitamin B12 absorption.
