DAOfood Plus is a Food for Special Medical Use for the dietary management of DAO deficiency. DAOfood® Plus supports digestive health by restoring DAO enzyme activity and breaking down histamine ingested with food.
DAOfood® Plus' Diamine Oxidase (DAO) supplements the body's own enzyme, which is responsible for metabolizing histamine. Taking one DAOfood® Plus capsule before each meal increases the amount of DAO in the small intestine and, therefore, its ability to degrade histamine. This accelerates the digestive tract's processing of histamine present in food, which is the trigger for symptoms. Thus, DAO Food® Plus restores histamine metabolism locally in the small intestine and restores the natural balance of histamine and DAO.
Histamine is an essential molecule, a transmitter belonging to the group of so-called biogenic amines, and is naturally present in many foods and within our cells. Normally, ingesting histamine from food does not cause problems, as it is rapidly processed and metabolized by the enzyme Diamine Oxidase (DAO).
DAO is the main enzyme involved in the metabolism of ingested histamine. It is found primarily in the intestinal epithelium, where it absorbs and degrades ingested histamine, preventing it from entering the bloodstream.
When there's an imbalance between ingested histamine and the enzyme's ability or activity to metabolize it, histamine enters the bloodstream and, after disproportionate uptake by tissue receptors, can trigger various reactions. Some causes of DAO deficiency include genetic or acquired origins.
Histamine is present in all foods to a greater or lesser extent, whether of plant or animal origin. Foods subjected to prolonged ripening or prolonged storage are particularly rich in histamine and other biogenic amines, which are also degraded by the enzyme DAO.

What does DAOfood® Plus contain?
DAOfood® Plus Eficaps® capsules contain gastro-resistant tablets with controlled release of DAO in the intestine, avoiding the acidic pH of the stomach, and tablets that ensure the immediate release of adjuvant active ingredients. Each capsule contains four tablets: two white/beige gastro-resistant tablets with intestinal release; one brown immediate-release tablet with vitamin C; and one green immediate-release tablet with quercetin*.(*) If you cannot take quercetin, you can open the capsule and remove the green tablet.
