Pharma Nord's BioActivo Vitamin D 38ug is a supplement consisting of small softgel capsules containing 38 μg of vitamin _D. The small size makes it easy to swallow. Vitamin D is dissolved in cold-pressed olive oil, keeping in mind that vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin.

What is vitamin D?

Like other vitamins, vitamin D is essential. There are several types of vitamin D, but the two most important are vitamin _D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin _D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D3 is the form synthesized in the skin from cholesterol when we are exposed to a reasonable amount of sunlight or a similar type of UV radiation. Sunlight-derived vitamin D is an effective source of vitamin D, but it is only produced when the sun is at its highest point. In much of Europe, this only occurs during the summer, and therefore, only then will sufficient levels of vitamin D be produced.
Vitamin _D2 is found only in food, produced by certain fungi and plants when exposed to ultraviolet light. Both vitamins _D2 and _D3 require activation in the liver and kidneys to become biologically active. Science previously believed that both forms of vitamin D were equally effective in the body. However, depending on the measurement method used, vitamin _D3 turns out to be 56 to 87% more effective than vitamin _D2 at increasing blood vitamin D levels. Furthermore, vitamin _D3 is stored in adipose tissue 3X more effectively than vitamin _D2 .*
