Description

Now's Boswellia Extract 250mg for Joint Inflammation Support

Now's Boswellia Extract 250mg (Serrata) contains 65% boswellic acid. It has anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory properties through direct action on 5-lipoxygenase. It prevents gastric irritation, ulceration, bleeding, metabolic changes, decreased immune response, and cardiovascular system deterioration. Contains curcumin extract, which has anti-inflammatory properties.

It is a selectively standardized extract produced from the gum resin of the Boswellia serrata tree containing 65% Boswellic acids which are the active non-steroidal components responsible for its anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory properties by direct action on 5-lipoxygenase, a key enzyme for the production of leukotrienes and also by inhibiting the leukocyte elastase enzyme.

The inflammatory process involves the cascade of arachidonic acid, an essential fatty acid, which can follow two pathways depending on the enzyme involved: either it is converted into prostaglandins (PG), prostacyclins, and thromboxane by cyclooxygenase, or into leukotrienes and hydroxyeicosatetranoic acids (HETE) by lipoxygenase. These substances are mediators responsible for vascular dilation, increasing vascular permeability, redness, pain, and other characteristic manifestations of the inflammatory reaction.

Available anti-inflammatory drugs operate through two mechanisms: either they interfere with the cyclooxygenase pathway by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis (e.g., acetylsalicylic acid and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), or they inhibit both the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways by interfering with the action of the enzyme phospholipase A2 (glucocorticoids). These drugs, in addition to their effectiveness, also have serious side effects, such as gastric irritation, ulceration, bleeding, metabolic changes, decreased immune response, and deterioration of the cardiovascular system.

Boswellic acids, in turn, inhibit leukotriene synthesis via the 5-lipoxygenase enzyme, but do not affect cyclooxygenase activity, thus avoiding the associated side effects. These processes are safe for both oral and topical use and have proven effective in various forms of arthritis and related disorders. They increase blood circulation to the joints, inhibiting the migration or movement of leukocytes through blood vessels to the inflamed tissue, and decreasing transaminase levels, important parameters in the inflammatory process. Curcumin, in turn, contains a mixture of powerful antioxidants known as curcuminoids and has been described as having anti-inflammatory properties.
