Description

Vitamin K2 provides a significant amount of biologically active vitamin K2 in the form of menaquinone-7 (MK-7).

Vitamin K acts as a cofactor and increases bone formation by carboxylating osteocalcin. This allows osteocalcin to bind calcium and promote healthy bone mineralization. Vitamin K2, or menaquinone, includes a group of compounds that contain a central ring structure with variable side chains. These different side chains are responsible for variations in absorption, bioavailability, transport, and tissue distribution. The most common menaquinones are menaquinone-4 (MK-4) and menaquinone-7 (MK-7). Studies indicate that MK-7 concentrates in extrahepatic tissues, including vascular tissues, and has a longer half-life compared to the MK-4 form. Additionally, vitamin K supports healthy blood vessels by functioning as a cofactor in the production of blood clotting factors and blood vessel walls.

The Rotterdam study concluded that adequate intake of vitamin K2, not K1 (found in vegetables) has a high protective effect on Cardiovascular Health.

The same study indicates that eating foods rich in vitamin K2 daily (at least 32 mcg per day), which is present in the following fermented foods: natto, sauerkraut, and cheese, as well as in egg yolk, butter, and chicken liver, reduces arterial calcification and death related to cardiovascular disease by 50%.
