In nature, there is a special plant called Silybum marianum, or milk thistle, which is nature's response to the constant bombardment of toxic substances inflicted on our bodies by modern life. It contains a mixture of three flavonolignans that together are called silymarin. The concentration of silymarin is highest in the fruit, and it is also found in the seeds and leaves. Silymarin's effect on preventing liver damage and enhancing its function is largely related to its ability to inhibit the factors responsible for liver damage—free radicals and leukotrienes—and to stimulate hepatic protein synthesis (perhaps the most interesting effect of silybum's components on the liver). The result is an increased production of new liver cells to replace damaged ones. This demonstrates that silymarin exerts a protective and restorative effect on the liver.

Silymarin prevents free radical damage by acting as an antioxidant, often more potent in antioxidant activity than vitamin E. Silymarin not only prevents glutathione (GSH) depletion induced by alcohol and other liver toxins, but has also been shown to increase basal liver GSH. This is extremely useful when exposure to toxic substances is high, due to glutathione's vital role in detoxification reactions.

In Europe, milk thistle is a popular herbal medicine, supported by solid scientific evidence that it can prevent and reverse liver damage by regenerating liver cells and large areas of liver tissue. Much of the research has been conducted in Germany, where it has government support, as a complementary treatment for chronic liver inflammation and cirrhosis.

In the 1970s, German researchers at the University of Munich confirmed milk thistle's reputation as a popular liver medicine by identifying liver-protective pharmacological agents in its seeds or fruit, and even detailing its mode of action against the toxins known to be most lethal to liver cells. Moderate alcohol users—acute and chronic hepatitis, drug damage, and exposure to toxic chemicals—even advanced, often irreversible cirrhosis for which few pharmaceutical drugs have any effect, as well as for cases of bile duct inflammation.

Silymarin is a unique antioxidant complex that exerts its healing power by preventing damage to healthy liver cells and simultaneously stimulating the regeneration of already affected cells, according to extensive research. Specifically, silymarin stands guard at the external receptor sites of cells, preventing toxins from breaking down the lipid fraction of cell membranes and penetrating them. It also neutralizes toxic substances that do manage to penetrate them. It has the unique ability to stimulate protein synthesis in liver cells by increasing genetic activity (DNA and RNA), which, in fact, helps regenerate damaged cells.

Milk thistle also boosts other antioxidant defenses in liver cells to neutralize toxic invaders. For example, one of the most potent antioxidants in the human body is a highly detoxifying substance in the blood—glutathione. In healthy humans, silymarin increased blood glutathione concentrations by 35%. Curcuma, better known as Indian saffron, was added to enhance the benefits of this dietary supplement.

Scientific studies have confirmed turmeric's effective action as a detoxifier and liver stimulant. It is also now known that turmeric increases glutathione content and glutathione-S-transferase activity in the liver, which are key protectors against the harmful effects of toxins and free radicals.

One of the active ingredients in turmeric is curcuminoids, which have been shown in studies to have considerable anti-inflammatory activity, in part due to their ability to inhibit the synthesis of inflammatory prostaglandins and their inhibitory action on the enzyme nitric oxide synthase, which, as the name suggests, is involved in the synthesis of nitric oxide from L-arginine. Nitric oxide is implicated in the inflammatory and carcinogenic processes, making the action of curcuminoids essentially preventative.
