Magnesium 400mg 180vcap - Agora Alimentos

Magnesium is a nutrient involved in hundreds of metabolic reactions. An adult's body contains about 25 grams of this micronutrient, with about 60% found in bones, 27% in muscles, 7% in cells, and less than 1% found outside of them. This division results in its involvement in functions such as energy production, DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis, and iron transport across cell membranes.

Magnesium deficiency is rare, as the mineral is abundant in plant and animal foods. However, we should be aware of diseases that increase the risk of magnesium deficiency—such as Crohn's disease, malabsorption syndrome, celiac disease, kidney disease, and chronic alcoholism.

The recommended daily intake for men and women aged 19 to 30 is 400 and 310 milligrams, respectively. For those over 30, the recommended daily intake increases to 420 milligrams for men and 320 for women.

Magnesium is an essential mineral for energy production and metabolism, transmission of nerve impulses, bone mineralization, muscle contraction and normal heart rhythm.

It is a necessary cofactor for an estimated more than 300 metabolic reactions. Magnesium is also important for regulating calcium balance; inadequate magnesium levels can cause decreased calcium levels and resistance to the action of parathyroid hormone and vitamin D. All of these factors can lead to increased bone loss.

There are some physical conditions and special populations that generally have magnesium levels below those recommended, so supplementation is recommended in the case of:

Gastrointestinal diseases – prolonged diarrhea, Crohn's disease, malabsorption syndromes, and surgical removal of part of the intestine.

Kidney disease – diabetes and prolonged use of diuretics result in increased magnesium elimination.

Chronic alcoholism – poor and unbalanced diet, gastrointestinal problems, loss of magnesium through urine, all these factors contribute to the possibility of alcoholics having a magnesium deficiency.

Seniors - As intestinal absorption of magnesium tends to decrease with age, and urinary elimination increases, magnesium supplementation is advisable for older people.
