The medicinal benefits of green tea have been known for years, especially its stimulating effect, which helps maintain mental alertness. Rich in bioflavonoids and catechins (antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals that cause cell damage and premature aging), it helps reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels and prevent certain types of cancer. Results from several laboratory studies have shown that green tea plays important roles in fat metabolism, preventing the emulsification and absorption of ingested lipids, preventing the formation of lipids by the body, and preventing the formation of adipose tissue. It also increases energy expenditure by increasing thermogenesis, fat oxidation, and fecal lipid excretion. Due to its thermogenic effect, green tea extract has been used for many years to enhance and accelerate weight loss.

A study conducted in Switzerland with three groups of individuals following the same diet concluded that the group receiving green tea extract experienced a 4% increase in calorie burning rate and a 5% increase in total calorie burn compared to the control group. Another study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, demonstrated that green tea extract can increase energy utilization far beyond the effects of pure caffeine.

This extract consists of 50% epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), a very powerful antioxidant. Some researchers claim that it has antioxidant properties 100 times greater than vitamin C and 25 times greater than vitamin E in protecting genetic material (DNA). Its antioxidant activity prevents the formation of free radicals that could cause oxidative damage to cells. There is a close relationship between antioxidant activity and the prevention of heart disease, anti-inflammatory activity, and antitumor activity.

In a study in the journal Cancer Research, in rats fed green tea polyphenols through water for 30 days, researchers found a significant increase in the activity of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione-S-transferase, catalase and quinine reductase) in the small intestine, liver and lungs.

Population-based clinical studies (studies involving large groups of people over time and/or comparing groups of people from different cultures or with different eating habits) indicate that green tea (70% EGCG) may help prevent atherosclerosis (in particular coronary artery disease), not only because of its antioxidant properties, but also as a potent anti-inflammatory, very useful in the treatment of arterial inflammation.
