NOW's Candida Clear™ is a unique formula carefully developed to combat Candida albicans, a single-celled fungus that naturally resides in our digestive tract. Unbalanced levels of these bacteria can often lead to excessive yeast production in both men and women, leading to genital infections. It is a common fungus, one of the most common. It commonly exists in the human body, inhabiting the mouth, vagina, gastrointestinal tract, and skin—all regions where moisture conditions favor its growth. It can be found in small, harmless quantities in any of these organs. The problem arises when there is an imbalance between Candida albicans and the other microorganisms that share its habitat. This imbalance is often caused by taking antibiotics—intended to treat other infections, such as urinary tract infections, which act on all bacteria, killing both harmful and benign ones. These are favorable conditions for the growth of the fungus responsible for vaginal candidiasis.
But there are other possible causes: pregnancy, diabetes, a weakened immune system due to diseases like AIDS, or treatments like chemotherapy. One thing is certain: although it affects the genital system, candidiasis is not a sexually transmitted disease. This doesn't mean men are immune: in fact, sexual contact with an infected woman puts them at risk, and the infection can spread. Itching and redness of the penis are the most common symptoms. In women, excessive presence of this fungus triggers symptoms such as vaginal discharge, inflammation of the vulvar skin (with redness and itching on the outside of the vagina), and pain during intercourse and urination.
Given the symptoms, diagnosis requires collecting a sample of vaginal discharge to confirm the presence of the fungus. A pelvic exam may also be performed to detect any signs of infection inside the vagina or cervix. Once candidiasis is confirmed, treatment is with systemic antifungal medications (pills).
As a general rule, treatment should be extended to the woman's sexual partner, given the possibility that a small percentage of men may experience symptoms. It is recommended that both partners receive treatment simultaneously.
With proper treatment, symptoms disappear completely. However, if treatment isn't followed, there's a risk of the infection returning and becoming recurrent. The fungus Candida albicans is present in many other parts of the body besides the vagina, thus giving rise to other forms of candidiasis: oral candidiasis, esophagitis, and cutaneous candidiasis.
