Super Primrose 60 softgels Now is a good vegetarian source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is important for Women's Health.
Super Primrose, also known as evening primrose oil, is extracted through a natural process without the use of chemicals, hexane, or other solvents. Super Primrose is the most potent and concentrated form of Evening Primrose Oil you can find.
The oil extracted from the seeds by the first cold pressing is extremely rich in Essential Fatty Acids (EFA). It contains 72% linoleic acid and 10% gamma-linolenic acid. The latter is a precursor to prostaglandins, substances that act on the menstrual cycle.
Clinical studies have shown that Super Primrose, taken during the second half of the cycle, reduces premenstrual syndrome by acting on its manifestations: depression, irritability, breast tenderness, abdominal pain, water retention, and headaches. Researchers state that a GLA deficiency causes abnormal sensitivity to the hormone prolactin, which leads to premenstrual symptoms.
As one of the safest and most concentrated forms of GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid), Evening Primrose Oil remains one of the most important sources of essential fatty acids available in the diet.
Taken for centuries to promote health, we now know that GLA promotes healthy cellular activity. Once ingested, GLA is converted into prostaglandins - natural metabolites with a major influence on normalizing the Immune System, as well as the inflammatory response. This super-concentrated formula contains 1300 mg of Evening Primrose Oil, providing three times more GLA than standard formulations.
From Linolenic Acid, our body is able to produce Gamma-linolenic Acid (via the delta-6 desaturase enzyme), which gives rise to series 1 and 2 prostaglandins. It happens that as humans age, the levels of the aforementioned enzyme drop significantly, and the conversion of linoleic acid to gamma-linolenic acid is not carried out in sufficient quantity, and the entire remaining chain is compromised. Although prostaglandins are synthesized in the body from gamma-linolenic acid, there are several factors that can inhibit this conversion, in addition to age, such as high cholesterol levels, alcohol, viruses, insulin deficiency, and also stress; therefore, this group of people requires increased doses of Omega 6. Essential fatty acids decrease triglycerides and cholesterol in the blood and prevent coronary heart disease (CHD). Mixtures of Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids favorably alter the lipid profile.
A recent scientific paper demonstrated that this decrease can reach 11%. Other investigations have shown that the regular consumption of linoleic acid is associated with a low prevalence of CHD in women and men.
The results of these studies also showed that the combined intake of both fatty acids - Omega 3 and Omega 6 - presents synergistic effects in the prevention of this heart disease. GLA can also reduce platelet aggregation and thus prevent other cardiovascular diseases, such as thromboses. Evening Primrose Oil is evaluated for its gamma-linolenic acid content (GLA; 18:3 omega-6). GLA is recognized as being effective in reducing inflammation and in the treatment of atopic eczema, diabetic neuropathy, and certain cancers (McDonald and Fitzpatrick, 1998).
At NOW Foods, Super Primrose is analyzed for its GLA content by performing chromatography of the fatty acid methyl esters. They use this method to confirm the identity of the Evening Primrose Oil lipid profile. This process is taken into account to ensure that NOW formulas contain a concentrate with more than 9% GLA.
