Collagen is a structural protein in muscles, joints, bones, tendons, skin, nails, and hair, forming fibers that support tissues; it is, therefore, an essential protein for our body's general well-being.
This protein is essential for the health of the musculoskeletal system. This system includes connective tissue, such as bones, cartilage, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Its main functions are to provide rigid support to the body, protect organs and other tissues, and create and control movements.
Cartilage consists of cells called chondrocytes and an extensive extracellular matrix composed of fibers and other substances. It is the extracellular matrix with its fibers that not only gives resistance to cartilage but also allows it to bear weight and withstand considerable tensile forces. Collagen, hyaluronic acid, proteoglycans, and other glycoproteins are the main macromolecules present in all types of cartilage matrix.
Collagen is also essential for the structure and function of the skin. With aging, photoexposure, and exposure to stressors, the appearance and characteristics of the skin change. The skin is one of the organs that undergoes the most transformation with advancing age, especially due to collagen.
However, our body loses collagen with aging. At 30 years old, the body loses 1% of collagen per year. At 50 years old, it produces less than 40% of the collagen it needs.
For better absorption, hydrolyzed collagen seems to show greater evidence for restoring joint health. Hydrolyzed collagen is a more bioavailable form of collagen, prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis of collagenous tissue. Hydrolysis leads to the breakdown of the collagen molecule into peptides and, consequently, results in a greater number of exposed nuclei with side-chain carboxylic groups, resulting in greater efficiency in mineralization. The intake of hydrolyzed collagen provides the necessary amounts of the amino acids glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, essential amino acids for the stability and regeneration of connective tissue, in a bioavailable form.
