St. John's Wort is equally useful in other situations involving nervous and psychological changes. In this context, it can be used as a sedative in cases of anxiety and insomnia. Several experimental studies have already confirmed the mood-enhancing properties of St. John's Wort. Although research suggests that its antidepressant mechanism may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO), which degrades mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain, new studies have shown that it has little or no effect as an MAO inhibitor. More recent research suggests that this supplement's ability to reuptake serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine is likely the main factor responsible for its antidepressant effect. Inhibition of the production of interleukin-6 (a compound linked to depression in some people) has also been proposed, albeit theoretically.

This plant has been shown to be effective in treating anxiety and nervous excitement and may also improve sleep patterns (especially in depressed individuals), possibly due to the impact of serotonin activity on the brain.

In depressed patients, St. John's Wort leads to relief from symptoms of insomnia and hypersomnia (a sleep disorder that occurs when you wake up tired even after having slept well during the night).

As it is not yet known for sure what mechanism confers the properties of this plant and the most likely hypothesis is that it works as an inhibitor of the group of enzymes called MAO (monoamine oxidase), the simultaneous use of St. John's Wort with chemical medications that inhibit MAO is not recommended.
