Now's Cinnamon Bark 600mg helps regulate glucose metabolism.
NOW® Cinnamon Bark is a dietary supplement that helps regulate glucose metabolism and, consequently, keep blood sugar levels under control. Cinnamon is extracted from the bark of the cinnamon tree, a shrub belonging to the Lauraceae family, native to southern India and Sri Lanka. This dietary supplement contains three varieties of cinnamon: Cinnamomum verum or Ceylon cinnamon, Cinnamomum aromaticum or Chinese cinnamon, and Cinnamomum burmannii or Indonesian cassia. It contains the following bioactive compounds: cinnamaldehyde, coumarins, and proanthocyanidins (polyphenols). Some studies suggest that cinnamon has a hypoglycemic effect, primarily due to the polyphenols present.
This spice can positively influence glucose metabolism, reducing hyperglycemia: it improves insulin sensitivity by increasing glucose uptake; and it reduces intestinal absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. Thus, cinnamon can be an adjunctive therapy for diabetics.
In addition to its hypoglycemic effect, this spice has also been shown to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antilipidemic, and antifungal effects. The high polyphenol content reduces oxidative stress levels, as they have the ability to slow or inhibit the oxidation of oxidizable substrates by inhibiting a set of oxidizing enzymes, thus preventing cellular damage. Furthermore, these polyphenolic compounds exert a protective effect on lipid oxidation, preventing the oxidation of fats in the blood and, consequently, helping to reduce LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels and the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Fights harmful bacteria and fungi, being effective against candidiasis and ulcers.
Cinnamon is also beneficial for improving circulation, making it suitable for people who feel cold and have poor circulation. It can improve kidney and spleen function, as well as blood flow.
Prevents the onset of causes of inflammation and pain in patients with arthritis due to substances with anti-inflammatory activity: cinnamyl acetate, which reduces the release of arachidonic acid (a precursor of prostaglandins, responsible for inflammatory processes in our body); eugenol inhibits the action of prostaglandins themselves.
Cinnamon can also be used to improve digestion, as it has carminative (reduces intestinal gas), anti-ulcerative, anti-hermetic (prevents vomiting) and stomachic properties, due to the essential oils present in its composition, which stimulate salivation and gastric juices, facilitating digestion.
It also provides benefits for those who practice physical activity, as it enhances the storage of liver and muscle glycogen by improving the action of insulin, the enzymes responsible for glycogen storage and glucose transporters into the cell, positively influencing the metabolism of sugars and fats.
